A North Carolina Jiffy Lube employee was arrested and jailed on bribery charges connected with allegedly helping a customer pass a required state vehicle inspection.

According to police, the man solicited a $30 bribe from a Duke University librarian to overlook worn out tires on her 2001 Lexus. Supposedly, the technician told the woman that three of her tires needed to be replaced or she would fail the state-mandated inspection.

She, however, didn’t take the bait and left, taking her car to a Lexus dealer, where a second inspection found that the tires were fine.

The librarian reported the Jiffy Lube tech’s advances, and the N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles arrested the 28-year-old man, who worked at a Jiffy Lube outlet in Durham. He was held on $1,000 bond.

The man denies the felony bribery solicitation charges, but DMV inspectors reportedly uncovered another incident where the man passed a vehicle that was later found to have a nonworking emergency brake.
